VICTORIAN COMPETITION & EFFICIENCY COMMISSION

Inquiry into Victoria's tourism industry - November 29, 2010

We submit that great tourism benefits can be obtained by

* Creating man-made islands near Melbourne
* Renovating the South Channel Fort
* Renovating the South Channel Lighthouse
* Re-instating the jetty at Quarantine

MELBOURNE ISLANDS

Port Phillip is a great unrecognised asset for nature based tourism
The best way to dramatically turn it to advantage is to create two adjacent new islands close to Melbourne. It will also make a round-the-bay ferry service viable at long last

One island to be modelled on Rottnest Island off Perth as a tourist precinct with five-star and backpacker accommodation and restaurants. Fishing and diving would be welcomed and a safe harbour for boats would be provided This would take advantage of the many new harbours built or being built around the perimeter of the Bay to create one of the world's best cruising grounds, all being within enclosed waters. See http://www.rottnestisland.com/en/pages/Home.aspx rottnest

The second island to be a marine national park close by, like Mud Islands in the south of the Bay. As with Mud Islands, the public would be permitted to visit, but not encouraged. This island would provide natural habitat for birds and fish, which is urgently needed in Port Phillip. See http://home.vicnet.net.au/~fomi/

It has been done before the South Channel Fort and the Popes Eye Annulus are man-made islands
